Kenton roars to win over Bath

LIMA - Kenton freshman quarterback Maty Mauk completed 16 of 24 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns against Bath on Friday, and that was just in the first half.

The final result was an easy 40-8 victory over the home Bath Wildcats; but an injury to Mauk early in the second half put a damper on the win.

Kenton improves to 2-3 and 2-2 in the Western Buckeye League while Bath falls to 1-4 and 0-4 in the WBL.

After completing his first two passes on the opening drive of the third quarter, Mauk was sacked and left the game with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Kenton decided to lean on sophomore running back Bobby Handell, who responded with nine rushes for 71 yards in the second half.

Bath was never able to generate any offense and was held to 128 yards of total offense against the aggressive Kenton defense. Bath punted nine times.

"It was important for us to stop their inside running game," Kenton coach Mike Mauk said. "We kept them from maintaining control of the ball at the line of scrimmage."

Bath stayed close trailing only 7-0 late in the second quarter when Kenton exploded for 21 points in a little less than four minutes.

Mauk hit Handell with a 22-yard scoring strike with 5 minutes and 50 seconds left in the second period to give Kenton a 14-0 lead.

Bath was forced to punt on its next possession when the officials overruled what at first was called a Bath completed pass that would have given them a first down.

Bath was forced to punt and Mauk then found Andrew Tillman with a 57-yard strike down the left sideline and Kenton was suddenly ahead 21-0.

Bath then fumbled the ensuing kick-off and Mauk found Max Morrison for a 4-yard scoring strike and the Kenton lead was suddenly 28-0 at halftime.

"When you make mistakes you are going to lose football games," Bath coach Todd Clark said. "We made mistakes on both sides of the ball, but our defense played hard tonight and I am proud of them."

The only Bath points came when defensive back Aaron Rumbaugh intercepted Kenton back-up Alex Kissling and returned the ball 45 yards for a touchdown.
