Mathias leads Elida to thrilling win
Lima Senior girls basketball moves to 3-0
SPENCERVILLE - Bo Mathias came back from a knee injury not a moment too soon for the Elida boys basketball team. A 3-pointer late in the fourth from Mathias gave the Bulldogs new life, forcing overtime Friday night and helping lead Elida to a 69-66 win over Spencerville.
The 6-foot senior guard hit for a game-high 26 points. He made 11 of 14 free throws and three 3-pointers.
Reggie McAdams had 16 points and Alex McAdams another 12 for Elida (2-1).
Tyler Keysor scored 23 for the Bearcats (0-3). Zach Bowers added 21.
The teams combined to make 45 of 63 free throws.
Arlington 51, Leipsic 46: Leipsic struggled from the free throw line, making just 9 of 21 while the Red Devils converted a somewhat respectable 14 of 22. Arlington improved to 2-1 and Leipsic fell to 1-1.
Derek Mangas was the lone Vikings player in double figures, scoring 12 points with two 3-pointers.
Miller City 68, Ayersville 55: Cody Vennekotter scored 19 points as Miller City overcame a sluggish start to take the win. Mitch Wenzinger added 12 points and Rusty Lammers added 11 for Miller City; Lammers made three 3-pointers.
The Wildcats made 29 of 42 field goal attempts.
Fort Loramie 49, Botkins 31: Cody Albers had 20 points to lead Fort Loramie to the win. Loramie led 41-21 entering the fourth quarter.
Defiance 41, Paulding 24: Alex Keel scored nine of his 17 points in the second half while Steven Hammersmith had 13 of his 17 in the first half to lead Defiance to the non-league road win.
Defiance didn't make a 3-point attempt. Paulding made three 3-pointers, with Bryant Troyer (12 points) netting two.
Ottoville 61, Marion Local 50: Scott Pohlman scored eight of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to help Ottoville ice the win; the Big Green (2-0) outscored Marion Local 21-11 in the fourth.
Brad Turnwald had 13 points for Ottoville, which made 19 of 31 free throws. The Big Green made 12 of 20 free throws in the fourth.
Jason Wolters scored 13 points for the Flyers (0-1). Nathan Thobe and Travis Winner each added 10 points.
Parkway 51, Van Wert 48: Parkway remained perfect at 3-0 behind Josh Miller's 23 points. Miller made a pair of 3-pointers.
Van Wert (1-2) led 11-8 after the first quarter, but was outscored 18-9 in the second. They outscored the Panthers 28-25 in the second half.
Jake Bagley had three 3-pointers and led Van Wert with 14 points.
Perry 58, Marion Catholic 22: Brandon Riepenhoff drained four 3-pointers for his 12 points, and Justin Hyde added 10 points, as Perry went on the road for the Northwest Central Conference win.
Eight players scored for the Commodores (2-1, 1-0 NWCC).
St. Henry 53, St. Marys 31: St. Henry sprinted to the finish with a 17-6 edge in the fourth quarter, securing its 2-0 record. The Roughriders dropped to 0-2.
Spencer Niekamp, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, had 14 points and a pair of 3-pointers for the Redskins. Brent Prenger had 10 points and another two 3-pointers.
Pandora-Gilboa 51, Vanlue 33: Pandora-Gilboa went on a tear in the second half, outscoring Vanlue 34-15 to secure the non-league home win. Joshua Lee led the Rockets (2-0) with 19 points, and Sam Maag added 18.
The Rockets made six 3-point goals.
McComb 58, Cory-Rawson 32: McComb opened the second half with a 20-6 advantage in the third quarter and sprinted to the win. Only four players scored for Cory-Rawson.
Celina 67, Linden McKinley 56: Derek Gagle's 19 points led four players in double figures for Celina (1-1). Jake Green had 17 points, Darren Waterman 14 and Jared Bader 10.
Gagle had three 3-pointers, Bader a pair and Waterman one.
Anna 53, Jackson Center 32: Anna improved to 2-0 by opening up a 22-12 halftime lead. The Rockets converted 20 field goals, compared to just nine for Jackson Center (2-1).
Jay County, Ind. 49, Fort Recovery 44: Fort Recovery fell behind 25-15 by halftime and couldn't recover in the non-league loss. Greg Kahlig scored 20 points for the Indians.
Continental 43, Hicksville 34: Continental used a blazing first quarter to overcome a sluggish second and third for the win. The Pirates held a 21-12 lead after the first, but scored just nine points in the next two quarters.
John Spitnale, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, scored 18 points to lead the Pirates (2-0).
Riverside 103, Ridgemont 32: Riverside wasted no time, gaining leads of 28-6 after the first quarter and 55-16 by halftime. Five players scored in double figures for Riverside.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lima Senior 51, Napoleon 39: Tierra Washington scored 15 points and Kiara Crockett added 10 more as Lima Senior won its Greater Buckeye Conference opener. The Spartans are 3-0 overall.
Washington netted two of the Spartans four 3-pointers.
The loss dropped Napoleon to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Indian Lake 47, Dayton Stebbins 32: Aubrey Arledge had 14 points, with four 3-pointers, to lead Indian Lake to a 3-1 record. Ashley Oakley had 12 points and Sadie Oyer added 10 for the Lakers.
