Staley brings aggressive style of play to Allen East

LAFAYETTE - After three successful seasons as the defensive coordinator at Lima Central Catholic, Cam Staley hopes to put his brand on the Mustangs of Allen East as he begins his first season as head coach.
"We will play an attacking and aggressive style of defense." Staley said. "We will blitz and scheme to try to force the issue. We will use a base-50 but will shift our fronts to adjust to the offense we are facing."
The Mustangs have some key returnees to help them adjust to the new style of play.
Senior defensive back Joe Hunnaman and sophomore linebacker Levi Hoy both return after successful seasons last year.
The duo will also be counted on to play key roles in the Allen East offense.
Hoy will play quarterback in the Mustang shotgun attack, and Hunnaman will be the featured running back.
"We have decent kids at the skill positions." Staley said. "Hoy played well last year and we look for him to develop; we have Hunnaman at running back and speed at the wide receiver positions. We will try to spread the field and throw the ball a little bit."
That speed comes in the person of 6-foot-4, 180-pound senior E. J. Laing.
Line play will be an early concern for Staley because the Mustangs are fighting some minor nagging injuries while trying to develop a new system and blocking schemes.
Seniors Matt Dues (6-4, 195), Kyle Fields (6-4, 235) and Jeremy Pryer (6-0, 255) must provide leadership and stability in the offensive line while the newcomers develop.
Senior tight end Garrett Freeman returns as does senior fullback Matt Starr.
Freeman, at linebacker, and senior Lane Schafer, at defensive back, give the Mustangs needed inexperience on the defensive side of the ball.
"Our goals are to get better every day and then get better every week once the season starts," Staley said.
